Walking in Love

The focus of this family time is to use five easy steps to teach your family that Paul teaches that love is more important than knowledge or self-sacrifice. It’s even greater than faith and hope. Through Paul’s words, God—the only One who loves perfectly—shows us how to love.

MEMORY VERSE:

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

Learn the Memory Verse together and say it throughout the week to help your family remember and apply what they have learned.

STEP 1. GATHER!

We all need help learning new things, and sometimes the best way to learn is by following and mimicking someone else’s actions. Let’s play a game together called Copycat.

I will pretend to be a cat, and your job is to follow and copy every move I make. Today, you will all be copycats! However, watch closely, because I am one fast cat, and you will need to pay attention.

Let’s practice one time before we get started with our game of Copycat. Slowly move your head side to side and wait for kids to copy you. Great job practicing copying me. Now it’s time to begin.

STEP 2. READ THE BIBLE AND WORSHIP

Sing and have fun while worshiping then pray. Take a moment here to thank God for your family and your time together!!

STEP 3. DISCUSSION !

Watch the Bible Story video, and use these questions and points to have a conversation with your children about the Bible story.

REVIEW THE BIBLE STORY

Use these questions and points to have a conversation with your children about the Bible story.

  • Reread 1 Corinthians 13:1–3. What does Paul say we are if we don’t have love?
  • What’s one word or phrase that describes love?
  • Reread 1 Corinthians 13:4–7. What are some things love doesn’t do?
  • Who is someone you know who loves in the way Paul describes? Tell us about that person.
  • What are some examples of how God shows us this kind of love?
  • What makes showing love difficult at times?
  • What’s one area where you need the Holy Spirit’s help to love like God loves?

We’ve learned today that loving the way God loves isn’t easy. We can be grateful, though, to know that God is love and shows us how to love. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to help us love like He does.

Mission Moment

Patrick

(5th century)

Have you ever felt frightened and all alone? Perhaps you got lost and felt worried and afraid.

Patrick knew just What that felt like. Patrick lived a long time ago, when England was a very dangerous place. One day some pirates took him away from his family; they took him across the sea to Ireland, and sold him to a rich, fierce and powerful man. Patrick was frightened and all alone, but he knew that Jesus was with him. After many years Jesus helped Patrick go home to his family - but not for long! Patrick knew Jesus wanted the people in Ireland to find out how they could be his friends too.

So Patrick went back to Ireland. This time he wasn't scared. This time he was brave. This time he knew he had a job to do for Jesus;

Painick went to the richest, the fiercest and the most powerful men. Ireland. He went to the kings and chiefs. He told them about Jesus - the king of kings and chief of chiefs The powerful people told the less powerful people that they should listen to Patrick too. Soon thousands and thousands of people had become Jesus’ friends because Palnck was brave enough to tell them how. Patrick knew he could be brave if Jesus was with him. Do you?

STEP 5. Pray!

God, thank You for all of our friends here today. Thank You for sending Jesus to show us how to love and be more like You. May Your Spirit guide us in love every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Encourage the kids to hold their hands out in front of them, with palms up, as if their hands were open to receive something. Tell them to listen and receive the blessing as you speak it over them.

Blessing: The God of the universe sees you and loves you! May you experience His goodness every day. Taste and see that the Lord is good! His love for you never ends. Go in joy, sharing His unfailing love with others!
