FAITHFUL

The focus of this family time is to use five easy steps to teach your family that Abraham’s servant travels to find a wife for Abraham’s son Isaac. God provides a bride, Rebekah, and proves faithful in keeping His promises.

MEMORY VERSE:

“Know that the Lord your God is God, He is the faithful God.” Duet 7:9

Learn the Memory Verse together and say it throughout the week to help your family remember and apply what they have learned.

STEP 1. GATHER!

  • Call on your family to share their answers to the Welcome Question: When did you wait a long time for something, and it turned out to be worth the wait? If needed, help kids generate ideas by asking if they ever waited a long time for a particular gift, waited in line at an amusement park, or gone on a long road trip.
  • Today in God’s big story, we’re going to hear a story about a family who trusted God by waiting a long time for His promise to happen. But you, too, will have to wait, because first it’s time to be curious.

STEP 2. READ THE BIBLE AND WORSHIP

STEP 3. DISCUSSION !

Use these questions and points to have a conversation with your children about the Bible story.

REVIEW THE BIBLE STORY

  • What were the names of the people in today’s story who got married? (Isaac and Rebekah)
  • Why did Abraham send his servant away? (to find a wife for Isaac)
  • Where did Abraham’s servant meet Rebekah? (at the well)
  • What did Rebekah do to help Abraham’s servant? (She drew water for him and his camels.)
  • How do you imagine Abraham felt when his servant returned with a wife for Isaac?
  • What is something good that God has given you or done for you?

God made a promise to Abraham that he would have a really big family. Abraham sent his servant to find a bride for his son, Isaac. The servant had no idea what to expect, but he was thrilled when he met Rebekah, who immediately agreed to return and be Isaac’s wife. God kept His promise to Abraham because God is faithful. He does everything He says He will do!

Mission Moment

Lilias Trotter

(1853-1928)

If you could choose what to do today what would you choose? Playing outside or inside? Watching TV or reading a book. Sometimes it’s hard to choose.

Lilias Trotter knew she had to choose what to do - not just for a day, but for her whole life. Lilias loved painting - she was very good at it, and painting is a good thing to do. Lilias also loved telling people about her friend Jesus, and that is a good thing to do too. Should she spend her life as a painter and become rich and famous, or should she spend her life telling people about Jesus and be poor and unknown?

What would you choose? Lilias knew that painting was good, but telling people about Jesus was even better. That's what she chose to do.

Lilias went all the way to North Africa. The people there were Muslims Who didn't know about Jesus - so she told them in every way she could think of! She started sewing clubs and coffee shops; she traveled to tiny villages and tents in the desert, She made friends with women and children; she wrote little books and decorated them with her beautiful pictures. She did all this to tell people about her friend jesus and some of those people became Jesus’ friends too. Lilias certainly made the right choice!

STEP 5. Pray!

"God, You are always faithful. Long ago, You made a promise to Abraham and Isaac, and You kept it. Everything they needed You provided and prepared, and You do the same for us today. You are our faithful God. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

Encourage the kids to hold their hands out in front of them, with palms up, as if their hands were open to receive something. Tell them to listen and receive the blessing as you speak it over them.

Blessing: God is good and keeps His promises, so may you always expect Him to be faithful. The same God who kept His covenant to Abraham will remain faithful to you because He does not change. In seasons of waiting, may your faith grow, and may your life tell of God’s faithfulness.
