Family Worship

UNEXPECTED

The focus of this family time is to use five easy steps to teach your family that God has faithfully rescued His people, but they’re now thirsty and complaining in the desert. God responds with kindness, providing water for them from a rock because He cares about our needs.

MEMORY VERSE:

God is able to do far more than we could ever ask for or imagine. He does everything by his power that is working in us. —Ephesians 3:20

Learn the Memory Verse together and say it throughout the week to help your family remember and apply what they have learned.

STEP 1. GATHER!

Pose the following “I’m curious” questions. Say “I’m curious …” before each question and give kids a chance to think about and answer each one.

I’m curious ...

  • Do you ever complain to God?
  • When is a time God took care of you, even when you complained? Tell us about it.

STEP 2. READ THE BIBLE AND WORSHIP

STEP 3. DISCUSSION !

Use these questions and points to have a conversation with your children about the Bible story.

REVIEW THE BIBLE STORY

  • Who was leading the Israelites in today’s part of God’s big story? (Moses)
  • Where had God rescued the Israelites from? (Egypt)
  • Why were the Israelites complaining? (They were thirsty.)
  • How did God care about the needs of the Israelites? (He gave them water from a rock)
  • God loved His people even though they complained. What does this show us about God? (He cares about our needs.)
  • What are some ways God shows He cares about your needs?

God cared for the Israelites when they were thirsty in the desert. God cares about our needs too. Let’s ask God to provide for our needs.

Mission Moment

John Wesley

(1703-1791)

Does your church meet in a big building or a small building? is it old or new? Are the seats comfy or hard?

When John Wesley was growing up he went to church in a big, beautiful, old building. He liked church, he liked doing churchy things, he was very well behaved - but he wasn't Jesus’ friend. One day he found out from the Bible that he could be Jesus’ friend - not because he liked church, churchy things and being good, but because Jesus died on the cross for him.

John wanted everyone to know how they could be Jesus' friends too.

He told people in big, beautiful, old buildings - but often they didn't want to know and were very mean to him. They liked being churchy and well behaved, but weren't interested in being Jesus’ friends at all- so John went into fields and barns, town squares and halls. He traveled thousands and thousands of miles, year after year after year - all over England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. He told thousands and thousands of people all about Jesus, from morning to night. Some of these people didn't want to know and were very mean to him, but thousands and thousands listened and thousands and thousands became Jesus’ friends.

We can meet in a beautiful building, a shabby hut or even outdoors - what matters is that we are Jesus' friends.

STEP 5. Pray!

God, thank You for always knowing what we need. You never forget us. Thank You for Your love. Help us trust You and to be thankful this week for how You provide and care for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Encourage the kids to hold their hands out in front of them, with palms up, as if their hands were open to receive something. Tell them to listen and receive the blessing as you speak it over them.

Blessing: May God draw near to you this week. May He remind you, through His Holy Spirit, that He is always with you and cares about all your needs.
